I never, ever wanted this book to end. Cantwell's style is completely charming.
This book and author were recommended to me and I really got into it. The main character was a product of the 1950's and so many of her experiences were similar to mine. The story was humorous but so true to life in that time. The main character's relationship to her husband, children and past relationship with her father was a reflection of the times yet could still hold true for present times. I enjoyed reading about the well known literary characters she knew, both through her husband and her own career. I look forward to reading Mary Cantwell's other books based upon her life.
I wished I had of liked this more......I bought it after reading Carole Radziwell's book and she said she had read it and loved it. I was bored with it. But that is just my opinion. Anyone who is a true New Yorker may appreciate the NY of the 40's.
Boring as can be. Why would I want to know the various places she lived in especially if I did not know the village.

I LOVE NEW YORK! That is why I read this book. However, Mary Cantwell is a writer and I am not. Sometimes it can be hard to follow bc she is very descriptive. Lots of run-on sentences, but if you don't mind that, you will not mind digging a little to get to the meat of the story. I'm glad that I read this book bc I feel like I know more about New York. If I had it to do over again, I would have just read the LAST half of this book, and Mary's NEXT book, bc that is where her life really started to get interesting. My interest in New York is what got me through the first half of this book. All in all I did enjoy the book.
This book inspired me to move back to New York City.
