Bury Me When I’m Dead by Cheryl Head is a good old-fashioned whodunit, starring a cast of well-developed characters that help to ground its complex plot. Before I begin, a caveat or two: The protagonist of this novel isn’t lesbian, she’s bisexual, and that adds a little something extra to the plot (more on this later). Also, I haven’t read a mystery in a LONG time, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Do these things have a formula? Still, I know enough not to give too much away in this review, so no spoilers here. The premise of the novel simple: Charlene (Charlie) Mack, a Detroit-based private investigator, (she actually owns her own PI firm), is hired by her old friend Leonard Abrams to find Joyce Stringer, a beloved employee who seems to have gotten wrapped up in an embezzlement scheme. Charlie and her PI partner Don Rutkowski, a former cop, quickly discover that there’s a lot more going on than a missing persons case: scandalous family secrets including infidelity and incest; murder, a crime ring, and at the core of it all, Charlie’s reluctance to admit her feelings for Mandy Porter, a well-respected Detroit cop.The novel initially moves at a good pace, and Head’s exquisite attention to detail of the cityscapes of both Detroit and Birmingham, Alabama, (where much of the action takes place), is one of the novel’s strongest assets. I chuckled every time I read “meat and three,” a staple in soul food restaurants in my beloved south. These scenes also reminded me of Black migration stories, and how so many Black families traveled south-north routes to escape the racism of the south, only to be ostracized in the north as well. Head pays a lot of attention to the intersections of class, race, and gender in both regions, and these intersections figure prominently in how Charlie and Don run their investigations.Earlier I promised more on issue of bisexuality in the novel, and here are my thoughts on that: Charlie really, (and I mean really), seems to enjoy sex with women, but has a problem with the fact that she might be falling in love with one. So much so that she has a booty call with her ex-husband to try to get rid of those feelings. She’s also engaged in an adulterous affair with Don, feeding into the stereotype that bisexual folks just want sex and don’t care who they hurt. As a human, I realize that there are people who actually do these things, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity, but this representation of bisexuality left me with a bad taste in my mouth. In Charlie’s defense, she finally admits that she’s struggling with internalized homophobia, but for me the admission comes a little too late.Overall, I enjoyed this novel and although it seemed to slow down a little at the end, (there were lots of subplots to sort out), I’m looking forward to Head’s next book in this series. I’m interested in seeing how Charlie deals with her burgeoning romance with a woman, as well as what new mysteries she’ll have to solve.*My review of this novel originally appeared on the Black Lesbian Literary Collective's review blog.*

I had a hard time at the beginning of the book. I didn't really like Charlie Mack, she was just too much of a control freak. I concentrated on the descriptions of Detroit, the character development, and willed myself though. As I got further and further into the book I began to understand Mack. She is definitely a product of her environment, and despite her shortcomings has a warm heart, and a desire to help people. I have to tip my hat to Head for creating a character that I can both love and hate. She also does a great job of describing Detroit. Quite a good read.

Cheryl Head is a terrific storyteller and, in “Bury Me When I’m Dead,” she has a terrific story to tell. It’s a story that starts as a routine case for Bury Me’s protagonist, private investigator Charlene (Charlie) Mack: a restaurant supply account executive who has disappeared, along with $100,00 of her employer’s money. But the events that follow are anything but routine. They take her from her (and her author’s) home town, Detroit, to Birmingham, Alabama and to a vacant lot where she is bound, gagged and beaten to within an inch of her life.In addition to having a gift for story-telling, Cheryl Head has a gift for characters--white and black, gay and straight, men and women—a gift for getting into their heads and understanding them better, perhaps than they understand themselves. And none of her characters are more vivid than the two cities that play major parts in this tale.A great story, great characters, and a wealth of human insight. I couldn’t wait to find out how it ended—but I was sorry when it was over.

This was a fun, engaging read - the story was complex (thought not overwhelming) and interesting; rich with scenery and interesting settings. I especially enjoyed the iconic Detroit scenes. It was entertaining to unravel the connections and history of the characters and the book included some well-crafted suspense. This would easily turn into a great movie, and (especially toward the end!) was hard to put down. Looking forward to more Charlie Mack!

Charlie Mack, PI, is a hero for our times. I was immersed and totally engaged by the tale crafted by Cheryl A. Head. I was on Mack’s side from the start, following every detail of the case, and following her goings-on. I love women who call it like it is. And Mack does not disappoint as when she tells the patriarch exactly what he does not want to hear. The author has woven a richly told tale that keeps you guessing and on your toes. The cities of Detroit, Mich. and Birmingham, Ala. are also great protagonists. Like the best stories, this one holds you captive. When it ends, you must readjust to who you are and where you are, still hoping you were Charlie Mack, PI. I hope we get to see more of this character, and Cheryl A. Head’s stories.

I simply loved this book. I'm from the Detroit area and totally felt like I was in the city while reading this mystery. I could feel the city and since living in Chicago, for the past 18 years, I was taken right back to my hometown. I went to Wayne State University, in Detroit, and worked downtown, so to be able to have such a vivid picture of the city, was truly captivating Also, Charlie is a character that I want to follow. Her and her cast of characters are relatable and a group that will be interesting to follow as they grow through this series. Looking forward to the next Charlie Mack mystery.

If you want a great mystery with rich characters and twist and turns that will hold you until the end, then read this book. But don't just read this story; come on a journey with the books' heroine; the intelligent, cleaver, sexy Charlie Mack. Her investigation takes you around Detroit and then " down south" where secrets, action, and surprises await. Cheryl Head is a gifted writer and fabulous story telller. I'm looking forward to her next installment of the Charlie Mack series.

I found this book to be very intriguing! It’s a great mystery and I highly recommend it. I also read the author’s second book and recommend it, as well.
