(Review updated for fourth edition.)The plan drawings are detailed, and there is a nearly comprehensive featuring of aircraft. The color photos are a welcome addition. There are some errors though, most of which are remarkable for a 2005 publishing:- The F-22 entry contains drawings of a YF-22.- The Su-30 and -33 are portrayed as externally identical, when the -33 actually has fixed canards. The Flanker series is a real welter of designations though.- The CAC J-10 is missing.- The Eclipse 500 and Cessna 510 Mustang are missing. Those will likely be added after entering service. These shortcomings lead me to believe that Jane's influenced the content minimally, and that it is mostly a Collins Reference work. All the World's Aircraft contains none of these mistakes. The F-22 entry particularly baffles me. The general arrangement revisions to the YF-22 are over a decade old, and the F-22 is a highly conspicuous aircraft today. A program of its importance demands accurate illustration.Regardless, I'd suppose this book accurately portrays at least 95% of all current aircraft, in the limited manner of a "recognition guide." The new acronym glossary covers most popular acronyms and is decent for the beginner. There's also a section on military aircraft markings (US star and bars, numerous roundels, etc.), so that you can correct CNN when they mislabel Greek F-16s as Italian. This is a useful book with minor errors which achieves its goal: providing information for visual recognition of the vast majority of aircraft.
My husband used to work in the aircraft industry, so I bought this as a gift for him. He loves it!
This book provides a photo, drawing, and basic information on about 500aircraft currently flying. The basic information includes: History, variants, specifications, dimensions, and features. The back of the bookprovides a glossary and international civil and national military aircraftmarkings. There is no index in the back. There are a few errors relatedto the aircraft listed on a page and the drawing of a version other thanwhat is listed on that page. Since there are so many aircraft flyingworldwide, one suggestion may be to make two books from this book and addmore aircraft/information. The following is a list of aircraft that arenot mentioned in the book: Grumman C-2 Greyhound, Lockheed EP-3EARIES II, Augusta MH-68A Stingray, Boeing 787, Cessna 162, MitsubishiMU-2, Eclipse 500, MiG-17 (J-5), MiG-15 (J-2), Sukhoi Superjet 100, Su-28Frogfoot, Antonov An-225 Mriya, Beriev Be-12 Mail, Cessna 510, ChengduJ-10 Vigorous Dragon (F-10 Vanguard), Su-26 29 31, Xian JH-7 (FBC-1)Flounder, Harbin Y-11 Chan, Harbin Y-12, KJ-2000 (A-50), Su-80, Il-28(H-5) Beagle, An-22 Cock, An-28 Cash, Yak-12 Creek, Yak-50, Yak-52, MilMi-4 Hound (Harbin Z-5), Curtiss C-46 Commando, An-14 Clod, etc.
Jane's makes great stuff and this book is good. As a recognition guide this leaves a lot to be desired. I was hoping for a useful guide maybe with some flow charts to help aid in aircraft identification, but there's nothing like that in here.
Very nicely done, but could be better organized. Would buy it again.
I got this for a college class, being an ATC major this book helped me with aircraft recognition which is my worst skill. Still use it to this day.
