Very informative and well written book about a phase of history that is so often overlooked.
Buying this book I did not expect that with the small volume it contains so much information given in an interesting way. I recommend it for everyone interested in the history of the Near East!
This is an eloquently written thesis on the Hittites and worth reading.
As detailed as possible, a summary of the Hittite people, a previously little-known people who ruled Anatolia - the area now known as Turkey. This book is a compilation of facts, rumors, innuendoes, inconclusive conclusions, and guesswork assembled into an overview of the history - rise, fall, and disappearance into the mists of time - of a significant civilization, the Hittites. (As an aside, one their early rulers was named Suppiluliuma, one of the greatest names in all of history). Anyway, this book is a listing of peoples, places, and names better covered by "1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed" by Cline and Caploe, which reads more as a story. This book would read better as a spreadsheet. The Hittites are mentioned in the Bible several times, and had significant interactions with the ancient Egyptians. Much of the rest of their history is known through their interactions with other "tribes" and from a store of clay tablets recently uncovered by an archaeologist. It's all included in these pages.
There isn't a whole let left to go on about their culture, at least early on. They did have a feudal system and were patriarchal, but most civilizations were that way (and still are.) As with other early civilizations, they started off as nomads, went to the settled city stage then started fighting each other.None of these civilizations ever learned that fighting each other just weakened them so they would end up being taken over by another culture which would repeat the same mistakes. They ended up with the 'divine rule' approach and interacted with Ramses II of Egypt. Then there came a problem with the 'sea people' which no one actually seems to know exactly who these people were. It seems they were quite strong, no matter who they were.As with the Canaanites the Hittites are mentioned in the Bible. The book discusses other topics including stone reliefs, their homes, clothing, medicine, food, rituals, mythology, and religion. They also are noted for their use of political diplomacy and peace treaties. Their legal system is interesting since it ended up usually assigning fines to people rather than beating them, torturing them or killing them as happened elsewhere. Altogether an interesting people.
I am always happy to see a new history and am never disappointed. I especially like that it triggers my curiosity for more!
This book is an excellent introduction to the Hittites, as well as possessing excellent information for the serious student of history. Well worth the read.
