Exactly what every member of the House, Senate, and Executive branch needs today. Every elected, and appointed, individual at any level of government should read this book, and then, more importantly, strive to ingrained these 12 virtues into their lives. Every school should make this mandatory reading and teach the 12 Virtues to every student from kindergarten thru college. Well written and inspiring. A must read for all Americans.
Being a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major and have attended several Leadership Courses and having read a few Maxwell books, which are great, this has to be the best book I have read. It not only covers History of some of our great leaders, but their character, moral values, etc., Highly recommend for everyone, whether Ain a leadership position or not.
Pat Williams's latest book is honest and true on how we all have the responsibility to develop leadership skills in ourselves and those we interact with. I am a naturalized citizen for over fifty years. My parents only experiences shared about Nazi occupied Netherlands was that of the character of the United States Army. Reading about the World War II military leaders brought back the conversations I had with my parents about the promise of our country for those who develop leadership through character for the benefit of all. I wish my parents were alive to read about the World War II heroes that saved so many lives through their West Point foundation of academics and discipline. This book will be given as gifts for years to come to graduates as a road map to adulthood.
Another great book by Mr Williams I have read several of his and Mr Dennys books,if you love to read or have kids these two have some of the best books to read I would give them a 10 star rating.
Very interesting read. Lots to think on. Taking my time to absorb all that it contains. If you like Sun Tzu you will like this one too.
Being a former Air Force Officer, "Character Carved In Stone" naturally drew my attention. Just over 200 pages, the book centers around 12 benches at West Point, each carved with a particular character quality very important to the academy. The title mentions several people in each chapter/quality such as: US Grant, Eisenhower, Ridgeway, Bradley, etc. - some well-known in US history and others not so well-known but nevertheless were outstanding examples to the troops around them, sometimes at the cost of their own lives. As the author describes each character trait and some people fitting the trait, he also includes examples of how to apply the trait to our lives. Some examples include:1. 5 ways we can become more courageous.2. Suggestions for building self-discipline.3. 7 ways to build loyalty in your team or organization.4. 12 insights we can learn from the West Point graduates mentioned in the book.Well-written, easily readable, and smoothly transitions from topic to topic, the book is full of good practical examples. There are many examples of appropriate Bible verses and because of that (and other reasons), the book is not just another rah-rah motivational hype book that can make one jaded.Enjoyed reading and will refer to again. I was given a review copy by Revell/Baker Publishing in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
Character Carved in Stone: The 12 Core Virtues of West Point That Build Leaders and Produce Success is and inspiring and motivating book by Pat Williams. Each chapter of this book goes through one of the core values used at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Some of these core values include: courage, determination, integrity perseverance, and responsibility. Each chapter tells the story of a West Point graduate from the past or the present who exhibits that particular characteristic. There is also plenty of advice for anyone to be able to grow in each characteristic too. This is such an inspirational and motivational book. Anyone wanting to grow in their character or their leadership abilities will find so much help within its pages. These core values are lacking in society today and are desperately needed. I received this book for free from Revell Books for review.
Through a series of vignettes about the great military leaders of our nation who have graduated from West Point, the author encourages his readers that we, too, can develop the qualities of great leaders and have success in our lives. This is like a short biography of many different military leaders, some from the last century and others from the time of the Civil War. I was most interested to find out more about U.S. Grant since he was never really hailed as a hero here in my native South. I also enjoyed reading about General Omar Bradley and his sacrifices, the reason his men trusted him enough to follow him into battle. Each story is told with the backdrop of West Point and the influence it had on each leader. I never knew about the benches at West Point, but the qualities that each leader showed and the qualities taught at West Point are some that I hope others in the United States can aspire to. This was an inspirational book that all should read and refer to frequently.DisclaimerDisclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Books.
