I thought this book would focus heavily on models of the 80's and 90's, but it's actually more like a history of modeling. Much of the book seemed to center on modeling/models from the 50's. These figures weren't familiar to me and I wasn't interested, so the book felt like a waste. I was kinda of shocked because the author was so ubiquitous as a go-to authority on modeling during the 90's. When TV tabloid shows needed to interview someone about models, they'd go to him.

Exciting book on the modelling world. Gives insight on this glamorous and still treacherous field. There is a real polarity to modelling.

Book is full of both interesting and uninteresting details, and reads more like a catalog of models by name with bits and snippets of their lives. Just okay.

Amazing history of famous models. I could not put this book down! Fantastic read...I was sorry when it ended. Highly recommended:)

I bought this book after coming across the story of Gia Carangi, and got interested in finding out why is this world of modeling so different from mine. I should say the book appears to be very researched, but how can I really say? Most of those people I never heard of and it sure needs us to keep taking notes in order to not lose track of so many names and dates and facts... it gets kind of tiresome after a while. It's modern history in just the perspective of a single business. It sure puts a shadow on the appearance of glamour we, of course, associate with fashion magazines, beautiful people, clothing and accessories - because it focus so much on the negative aspects and the ugly parts it misses out all the cool bits which I'm sure are quite a lot. Nevertheless it's a "study" book and we draw many conclusions from it.. like, when one dedicates life exclusively to the hedonistic pursue of a certain aspect of beauty there's surely the risk of failing to live a complete and rewarding existence. And the obvious conclusion is: it's not solely the looks that bring you happiness as its not solely inteligence, friends, richess or hard work... a combination of more than one of these factores will eventually bring you the balance for a fulfing life. I enjoyed this book but I don't believe I'll be re reading it.

Interesting look into the nasty business of selling girls/women (that's what modeling is really all about).

While interesting, it was a awfully technical and there were just so many names. I'm not sure how else he could have told it, but it was a bit overwhelming. Maybe a chart showing the agencies would be helpful.

A big "WOW!" to Michael Gross for being able to gather and present information on such a vast and secretive industry, the modeling business. The book was huge but I enjoyed every single page and appreciated the inclusion of photographs. The only complaint I have is that the mentions of Brooke Shields and Cindy Crawford were way too small. When I was an impressionable teen back in the 90's Cindy was THE SUPER-SUPERMODEL and when i was reeeeeally little it was all about Brooke (what i'm trying to say is I was actually alive at the time so I know this as first hand knowledge) so I was surprised that they barely got any attention. But really the book was FULL of stories, it was really a fun read! I'd definitely reccomend this to anyone who loves the modeling/fashion world and especially to those girls who want to be models.

I love gossip and provocation as much as the next person, but these long, uneventful and repetitive chapters about models deliver neither. How many times do we need to hear how skeevy men chase after barely legal (and not at all legal) young girls/women, that drugs and alcohol have always been a problem in the trade, etc., etc. He doesn't go deeper than just recording the facts. Long, boring probably-transcribed-on-autopilot interviews with retired models make up many chapters. In sum, what's supposed to be a fun read, is a real zzzzzz read.
