Ruben Groenewald was a regular on South African and British fight cards and even though I didn’t follow his career closely, I had seen several of his fights. He was an honest fighter with solid fundamentals who always gave his all. Win or lose, as a fan you didn’t feel cheated. When you read the book, it is not difficult to figure out why it went the self publishing route. He reveals some shocking incidents ranging from outright fraud, to corruption and in some instances, at the very least, complacency, among some very big names and institutions in British boxing. It starts with his childhood, how he got into boxing and the usual sacrifices and hardships along the way. He offers an interesting perspective on various topics, such as a South Africa in political transition, religion, drugs, relationships, working as a fire fighter and the camaraderie between fighters. He became a highly successful amateur, winning gold at the African Games, before being denied his chance to compete at the Olympics by a shady amateur coach. That forces him to turn pro with a prominent South African trainer. The hoped for mentor-student relationship doesn’t materialize and struggling to obtain a sponsor, as well as suspicions that everything is not on the level money wise, he packed his bags and headed for England, where he hooked up with the Maloney brothers.Things looked like they could only get better and for a while it did. He fulfilled his father’s dream by becoming a world champion, beating local hero, Anthony Farnell, in his own backyard in front of 22 000 partisan supporters for the WBU middleweight title. Bizarrely, he couldn’t convince a South African TV station to cover the fight, which explains the local amnesia about this particular fight. His career should have been soaring, but then things go pear shaped. He loses his title in a controversial decision in a rematch three months later. That is not all that unusual in boxing; you often struggle to get a fair shake against the “house” (connected) fighter. But then it gets worse. Dealings are done without his knowledge, purses are never what are promised, the fighter gets used as a pawn in promotional disputes and money keeps disappearing between the promoters, managers and agents. When he eventually makes a stand and leaves the Maloneys, he gets black balled out of boxing, struggles to get fights and falls into financial hardship. When he finally gets his career going again, his prime has passed him by.While reading it, I often found myself asking, “Why didn’t he ask for the contract?” or “Why didn’t he get in writing what he was getting paid before the fight?” But then again, as he explains, he was just a starry eyed 20 year old kid in a foreign country among big names. At that age, given the same circumstances, most of us would probably have done the same.It isn’t all doom and gloom, however. There are some funny moments and he also rubs shoulders with some major names in boxing like Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, Carl Froch and others. His account of the Anthony Farnell fight gives a raw perspective as seen by the fighter. His determination to keep soldering on despite whatever setbacks get thrown in his way is inspiring. This book is a must read for every youngster out there wanting to turn professional. If there is a lesson to be learned, it is simply this: The fighter is the one taking the punches and getting the people in seats. He employs the trainer, manager, agents, etc., not the other way round. Take charge of your own money and own career and don’t trust others to do it.If I have to be critical of something, I would have to say that it could have done with some editing. There are some spelling and grammar mistakes and a factual error here and there. The same point is often repeated too often. But then again, this is a self published, raw story written by a fighter, not by a ghost writer talking to a fighter, like most of the books on famous fighters are.Ruben Groenewald is, after all, a fighter in every sense of the word, not a writer. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was well worth the read.

So much respect for Ruben! Great Road Warrior!

Gripping. Eye opening And Hard hitting. Well done mate.

Excellent story.
