This book has taken the major ideas in the history of philosophy, and made them stand out for easy consumption. I found this book more useful than most surveys of philosophy. The author has a good grasp on what are the major ideas of each major philosopher, and presents them succinctly.

Even as a fairly regular reader of philosophy, I find that the challenge is to figure out which of the ideas in philosophy are worth spending time on and periodically going back to. And, ideally, to be able to say that I think I now really do understand the ideas, or to flag which ideas might have something to say about my own life. In that context, I found that Martin Cohen and Robert Arp — authors of the book Philosophy Hacks — have done the hard work for people like me: boiling down what’s key. I think the book’s subtitle sums up what was attempted here: “100 clever ways to help you understand and remember the most important theories.”Cohen and Arp begin the book with this sentence: “This is a book of shortcuts to philosophy.” The book aims — for me, successfully — to distill the essence of the more classic ideas of philosophy, providing the insights that have come down to us through the ages. Over the centuries, people steeped in philosophy — along with interested amateurs — have recognized the ideas’ enduring nature. The authors’ introduction lays out their approach: What if it’s possible to draw out from the millions of pages of philosophy some key insights — the “barest of the bare essentials”?Cohen and Arp accomplish this. The authors first glean a hundred of those iconic ideas. Then they discuss each idea using the same approach: What they call a “helicopter view,” a “shortcut,” and the “hack.” Here’s what the authors tell us these are. Helicopter view: “This offers an overview of the philosophical idea, and usually its creator too, as well as a brief sketch of the context within which the insight was created.” Shortcut: “This strips the idea down in order to expose and explain the core elements of the theory.” Hack: “Short and to the point, this part offers a shortcut to making sense of the idea — and, crucially, remembering it.”I found Philosophy Hacks to have a commendably ambitious range. The book starts with ideas from the ancients (Eastern and Western philosophy), moves along to Medieval and Renaissance philosophy, then early and late modern philosophy, and finally 20th-century philosophy. Hinduism’s theism, Confucius’s golden rule, Socrates on knowledge, epicureanism, free will and evil, Ockham’s “razor,” Hobbes’s state of nature, Pascal’s “wager” on God’s existence, Kant’s moral theory, Adam Smith’s “hidden hand,” Schopenhauer’s pessimism, Nietzsche’s beyond good and evil, existential nihilism, Popper’s falsifiability, feminist philosophy, Lyotard’s post-modernism, Derrida’s deconstruction, Dawkins’s “blind watchmaker,” Arendt’s “banality of evil,” Searle’s Chinese Room. And the rest that round out the hundred theories that Cohen and Arp picked out.The book’s readability masks the magnitude of the challenge the authors likely faced, but is, I believe, a big part of what makes the book work as well as it does. Both authors have been commended before — they are prolific writers — for their clear, accessible style of writing. Thankfully, there are no pretensions or impenetrable abstractions. Instead, Cohen and Arp did the legwork of cutting through what can sometimes be the dense style of the original philosophers. The authors’ engaging style of writing is equaled by the visual appeal of the book’s pages, which I personally found very helpful: images and creative layout that navigate you through the account. In short, Cohen and Arp’s Philosophy Hacks does a nice job of guiding readers to those special moments in understanding, enjoying, and periodically going back to philosophy’s key ideas.
