Very similar in prose and content as the other book he has authored, the name of which slips my mind at the moment. Despite several stories being retold or similar to ones heard in the other bestseller, there is enough original Artie Lange storytelling here to keep true fans entertained, and should not disappoint fan's of the Stern Show either, as his years at the hit radio show are heavily discussed throughout the book, as well as Artie's earlier life. Artie writes from a place of self-loathing and the dark, dirty and destructive humor he is known for in his Stand-up routines and radio personality are on every page in this book. Fans of Lange should not miss this book, and this would be a good time to pick it up if you haven't read it already as Lange is about to co-star in the new HBO series about life as a comedian called "Crashing". Looks promising, hope he can make a comeback. He was one of the best parts about the Stern Show when it was arguably at it's best.
As someone who has never really listened to Howard Stern, I wasn't sure if I'd like this when so many reviews are from fans of the show.Let me just say, this is a fantastically well written book. I read a lot of celebrity memoirs, and I think this one quickly made the short list of books I'd recommend everyone read.Artie is a master storyteller. The book is a chronological tale winding through his life, with all the associated ups and downs. He comes off in equal parts as a guy you'd love to hang out with, and a guy you'd be too embarrassed to bring around your family. There are some fairly dark moments in the book, and the drug addiction is a recurring theme because it's a big part of his life. I think it's great that he wants to get past the addiction and hope it happens for him.I'm so glad I picked this up when I saw it in a promo email.
This is a FUN READ about Artie's crazy life and career in comedy. His on again, off again battle with drug addiction and how it interfered with his personal life and career is eerily familiar to fans of other comic geniuses like Chris Farley and John Balushi. Artie is no Farley or Balushi, but his life's story makes for a very entertaining read! I certainly hope Artie is able to hold back his demons and avoid the sad ending that Farley and Balushi endured. I recommend this book to anyone interested in reading funny stories or learning how comedians break into show biz.
Artie has had a roller-coaster of a life and he pulls no punches even when telling many very embarrassing stories about himself. I think Artie Lange will do almost anything for a joke, even making fun of the web-site where people are taking bets when he will die (he's a heavy opiate abuser and he is very honest about that also...) All the skinny on his life doing stand-up, and his years on the Stern show, but not nearly as interesting, to me at least, as the follow-up book "Crash and burn".
Artie bares a lot in this book. It's a nostalgic look at a NJ suburban childhood. But what is SO GREAT is Artie's ability to tell a story. I was teary eyed most of the time reading it, and some of the tears were from laughter! This is a great book for anyone wanting to remember the searing agony and ecstasy of adolescence. His courageous and self-effacing honesty really impressed me. Whether it's losing his virginity, or adolescent screw-ups, the book is a page-turner. Thanks Artie for a great book.
Great read even if you are not a fan of him or the stern show. He is brutally honest bout his life and is a page turner and will make you laugh and sad in the same chapter at times. Best line from his drug dealer" you are taking to many Percocet you ever thought abou heroin it's better for you liver"
If you're a big fan of Artie Lange, you'll enjoy this book. If you have only a passing interest in him, as I do, it's only OK.The style of the 'writing' feels like a transcript of stories read into a recorder and were promptly typed up and printed. It can be difficult to read at times because the train of thought wanders away from the original point or story. I'm obviously not a stickler for grammar or syntax, but the only way that I could get through it was to hear Artie's voice in my head. The writing is a definite distraction, but definitely Artie. The stores are mostly interesting and a good profile of his life. However, for someone who has gone through so much turmoil and strife, I wouldn't call it gritty. The book seems like a cathartic exercise for him to admit a few wrong doings and apologize to some folks he's wronged. In a lot of places it feels a little shallow. Then again, it is an autobiography, and things may be that simple for Artie. It feels true and honest, but ultimately a bit flat for me.I actually think that the audio book may have been more enjoyable so that I could hear Artie tell the stories in his own voice. Ultimately, it's an interesting profile of an addict and save for the fame he's enjoyed in his life, is probably extraordinarily similar to every other addict out there.
Stand-up comic, TV/film actor, and Howard Stern Show sidekick Artie Lange offers this heartfelt, sometimes raunchy 2008 autobiography. The story is told in the same distinctive voice that Lange uses on the Stern show. There are plenty of fun moments, but also despair from the premature demise of his father and subsequent repeated struggles with drugs and alcohol. Many of the stories have already been explored at length on-air, but Lange does provide some further details on most as well as one new revelation. Perhaps the best part for Artie's fans is the sixteen pages of color photographs. Howard Stern wrote the photo-heavy forward. Co-writer Anthony Bozza has also assisted on the recent celebrity biographies of Eminem and Slash, and seems to have helped Artie assemble a coherent, readable narrative. This was a quick read but with Amazon's discount it cost less than fourteen bucks during its week of release.
